All quiet on the western front (서부 전선 이상 없다) - Erich Maria Remarque (에리히 마리아 레마르크)

타오바오에서 책들을 찾아보다 눈에 띄었던 책인데, 얼마 전에 읽었던  <1919: Paris> 의 배경이 되었던 1차 세계대전에 대한 책이라 보게 되었다. 이상하게 전쟁 소설들이 잘 읽힌다...

 책을 펴면 나오는 첫 페이지에 저자가 다음과 같이 말하고 있는데, 책의 모든 내용을 딱 두문장에 압축한 절정의 말인 듯 하다.

This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.

 책의 내용은 1차 세계대전이 발발 후 참전하여 프랑스와의 전선에 투입 독일 청년(들)에 대한 이야기이다. 처음에 후방에서 전투 교육과 훈련을 받을 때는 아직 전쟁에 대한 실감이 없던 편이라 훈련소와 군대에서 있을 부조리와 소소한 재미들이, 전선에서 들려오면 포탄소리를 마치 멀리 나와는 그렇게 크게 관계되지 않은 것으로 생각하게 만들지만, 이후 격렬한 전투가 이루어지는 서부 전선으로 투입된 이후, 공포로 얼룩이어져 가는 주인공의 심리상태가 눈에 띈다. 

 참호 속에서, 수도 없이 떨어지는 박격포와 포탄에 자신의 운명을 맡기고 자신의 옆에 있던 동료가 신체의 일부가 날라가고 부서져서 죽어가는 것을 보고, 시체들 사이에서 죽은 척을 하고 있어야 하는 날들을 보내면서, 과거에 학교에서 배우던 것들과 그리던 꿈들이 이제는 돌이킬 수 없고 다시 돌아갈 수도 없는 관계없는 과거와 미래가 되었다는 것을 깨닫게 된다.

 운과 생존 본능 덕분에 전선에서 버티었던 날들이 지나고, 휴가를 받아 고향에 돌아온 주인공  Paul Bäumer는 자신이 더이상 예전과 같지 않고, 예전에 집이라고 불리던 곳과 고향들 모두 자기와의 이질감을 더해주는 공간으로 변했음을 느끼며, 다시 부대로 복귀하는 날만을 기다리게 된다. 이곳에서 이미 Paul의 정상적인 인간성이 전쟁이 주는 극도의 스트레스로 인해 파괴되었음을 알게 해준다. 

 부대로 돌아와 보급품 정찰을 맡게된 Paul과 그 친구들은 전쟁의 비참함과 비정함에 길들여지게 된다..

But our comrades are dead, we cannot help them, they have their rest - and who knows what is waiting for us? We will make ourselves comfortable and sleep, and eat as mush as we can stuff into our bellies, and drink and smoke so that hours are not wasted. Life is short.

 Life is short.....이제까지 이 말은 너무 여러군데에서 차용되었던 문구이지만, 이토록 시리게 와닿는 말은 아니었다. 오히려 "Life is short"에는 뜨거운 열정의 냄새가 났었으나, 이 책에서, 이 부분에서 보았던 이 문장은 고드름같이 차가운 송곳에 찔리는 듯한 시리면서 아픈 말이었다.

전쟁이 진행됨에 따라, 역사가 말해줌에 따라, 전세가 독일에게 불리하게 진행됨에 따라, Paul의 친구이자 동료들이 하나둘씩 전쟁에서 목숨을 잃게 된다. 마지막 남은 친구 Kat과 Paul은 부상을 당해 후방으로 후송되지만, 후송 열차에서 Kat의 증세가 악화되어 중간에 병원으로 옮겨지게 된다. 이 부상으로 Kat이 절단 수술을 받게 되자 Paul도 부상을 가장하여 병원에 남게 되는데, 이곳에서 여러종류의 부상자들과 사망자들을 보면서 Paul은 병원만이 전쟁이 진짜로 무엇인지를 보여주는 곳이라고 말한다.

A man cannot realize that above such shattered bodies there are still human faces in which life goes its daily round. And this is only one hospital, one single station; there are hundreds of thousands in Germany, hundreds of thousands in France, hundreds of thousands in Russia. How senseless is everything that can ever be written, done, or thought, when such things are possible. It must be all lies and of no account when the culture of a thousand years could not prevent this stream of blood being poured out, there torture-chambers in their hundreds of thousands. A hospital alone shows what war is.

결국 Kat마저 다리 절단 수술 후 죽게 되자 주인공은, 다시 한번 커다란 공허함과 이질감, 파괴감을 느끼게 된다. 20년 넘게 차곡 차곡 만들어 왔던 자신의 내면이, 자신의 생각이, 자신의 사상이, 자신의 감정이, 자신의 모든 것이 2년이라는 짧은 전쟁 기간동안 얼마나 철저하게 파괴되어 왔으며, 20년동안 속해 왔던 자신의 주변과 사회를 2년의 짧은 시간동안 얼마나 철저하게 이질적이게 만들고 소외시켰는지 깨달으며 절망에 빠지게 된다.

Had we returned home in 1916, out of the suffering and the strength of our experience we might have unleashed a storm. Now if we go back we will be weary, broken, burnt out, root-less, and without hope. We will not be able to find our way any more. 

 And men will not understand us - for the generation that grew up before us, though it has passed these years with us already had a home and a calling; now it will return to its old occupations, and the war will be forgotten - and the generation that has grown up after us will be strange to us and push us aside. We will be superfluous even to ourselves, we will grow older, a few will adapt themselves, some others will merely submit, and most will be bewildered; - the years will pass by and in the end we shall fall into ruin.

다시 전방으로 돌아온 Paul은 1918년 10월에 그가 싸우던 서부전선에서 사망하고, 군은 당시 상황을 "All quiet on The Western Front"라고 짧게 보고 한다. 죽어가는 그의 얼굴에는 고통으 없었고 오히려 '이제야 드디어 모든 것이 끝나서 다행이야'라는 표정을 지었다.

 He fell in October 1918, on  a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front.

 He has fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face has an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.

전쟁 소설이 주는 전쟁의 참혹함과 경고, 인간성의 파괴등을 차치하더라도, 전쟁 소설은 늘 너무 슬프다...
